Art 1 Final Portfolio

1. My favorite was probably the canvas painting in the ending because we could work with colors and paint. I felt like I was pretty succesful in painting the canvas. We had to mix colors and understand how the diffrent shades can make a big impact in highlighting and showing values in the painting. It was also fun because we could choose a scene and try to get inspired by others and make our own. It was really nice to see how the little things you can do can make a big diffrence in the landscape painting, and how certain colors can complement each other. I really enjoyed the landscape painting because it was really fun and I learned what colors can complement each other. Overall the landscape painting is my favorite project over this semester.

2.I felt like I learned a lot from the game drawing.  It taught me how to use perspective and how if you use it can seem more realistic. It taught me about where to find the vanishing point and how to draw in 3D. I didn't really like the project because it was hard but I did grow from it and it taught me a lot of skills. I learned that you have to shade it to create value but perspective is also very important because its what makes the picture more realistic or not. It taught me how to use lines and how it actually matters where you put it and if its straight or not. In the game drawing project you had to pay attention to a lot of details and that's why I feel like it taught me many skills and techniques than all the other project I've had.

3. I feel like I used a lot of the skills and techniques from the value portraits. I learned how to use shading and where to shade. Since we were drawing an actual face it was difficult but I soon learned that shading is what makes it real. When you were shading you also had to be careful because it was a very gradual process because you can't go to dark so quick so you had to have a light hand with it but you were also suppose to have very dark features and very light ones too. The hair was also difficult because you had to draw every single strand. In the value protrait I learned everywhere had value like you couldn't shade one place of the face and not shade in the other because it wouldn't look real. We had to circle everywhere that had dark values and light values and shade it gradually. I used the skills and techniques I learned in the value portraits and used it every other project we had.

4. I felt like the stencil project was the least important because it didn't teach us much skills. It was fun but we didn't learn much from it. The only thing I learned from it was recongnizing where to cut out the vaules and how the values can make your picture look diffrent. I cut out the dark values and sprayed paint on top and I didn't spray much or it would start to leak and you couldn't tell what your project was suppose to be. I also learned that having the right background is very important. For the Stencils I did Mount Rushmore so I used a very earthy color like green and browns. I glued paper that had earthy colors in the background and spray painted the cut out on top to make the stencils. Overall I felt like it was a fun project but I learned the least from it compared to the other projects we have had.

5. I feel like the one I really liked was the clay tile because I had the most fun in making it. It was nice and I learned how to make things with clay. I chose to make a mountain and a wolf. I feel like the clay tile turned out the way i liked it to be. The clay was messy but I learned how to make shapes with it. After it was in the kilm I painted over it and learned how to make the colors complement each other. I had always wanted to make something out of clay and it was really fun that I did. Overall I feel like I had the most connection to the clay tile.

Game drawing

In this game drawing piece I felt like it was accepatable. The hardest thing for me was probably trying to find the horizen line because without the horizon you can't really have a perspective of the drawing and using the colored pencils to show the value in this picture. It was easy to use the watercolor to show the highlights and shadows of the drawing but using the watercolor you have to be very light with it. It's basically putting light washes on the picture to show later on with the color pencils overlapping it the color better. Later on with the color pencils you will have to gradually blend the colors so it can be realistic.

Anamorphosis drawings

To change the perspective of the drawing you have to photoshop it in the right angle. Afterwards you make it fit the scale of the paper so some of it won't be cut off. Then you take a piece of paper and you draw a grid on it with 1in squares. You also do the same in the other paper you printed out.
By streatching and distorting the object you can transform it to make it appear diffrent in a certain angle. So on a certain angle it can look like its realistic and thats what makes it Anamorphosis. It's very important to use the color pencils to show the value in the object and the shadows. By making the values and shadows that's what makes it more realsitic.

Stencil

1. Explain how you changed your photo in the lab to create a stencil.
I outlined the dark spots to create the features, So then when I cut it out it will show that the picture is Mount Rushmore.

2. When creating the collage background explain your choices of colors, materials (magazine paper, books pages, etc), and placement. How does it relate to your topic? If no relation discuss general idea.
For the background I tried to find green color and brown to show that it was like nature. I mostly took magazine paper but when I couldn't find much green anymore I used the green construction paper. I beleived the the color green really helped the picture to feel more like a mountain.

3. Discuss the way positive and negative space was used to create your stencil.
I cut out the dark spaces and left the white spaces because the dark help the features alot.

4. When using the xacto knife, explain the safety procedures, how to use the knife and any challenges you had to overcome while cutting.
When using the xacto knife you have to be very careful. You always have to cut away from yourself so there wouldn't be an accident. The hardest thing is trying to learn how to cut away from yourself using the xacto knife.

5. How was your experience with the spray paint? Discuss how color choice is important, placement of stencil, and any other concepts you noticed while creating this.
Spray painting was very easy and just don't use to much black so you can see the outlines of the faces and try not to spray so close because afterwards the paint could go drip down and cover the lines. Try to use use light colors for the background and then use black so it could pop out.

Print Making

1.     Describe the overall composition of your artwork (balance, unity, rhythm and movement). I feel like the art had some movement but it could have been more balanced. I should have applied more paint because it has some spots that showed through the paint. Also I should have craved out more spots to show more textures of the giraffe.

2.     How did you add texture and contrast to your print? Is this important? Why? Yes, adding texture is really important because then it shows the features of  the giraffe has so it looks more life like. I tried to add more texture be craving thick and skinnier lines in the picture.

3.     Explain how you used positive and negative space to show your image. I decided to keep the spots the giraffe had because thats one of the important feauture a giraffe has. Then I decided to cut out the rest of the space of the giraffe. For the background I decided to just carve out the lines of the mountain and keep the rest of the space to balance out with the giraffe.

4.     Describe the craftsmanship of your print. (How good the project is technically crafted) I feel like the craftmanship was good. I should have applied more paint and drew more textures to show more balance with the giraffe and the mountain.

5.     Were you able to achieve depth by showing a foreground, middle ground and back- ground? Explain. Yes, I think that the background kind of helped the animal stand out so then people can see that the giraffe is standing in front of the mountain and it's not mixed in together.

6.     Explain your experience with Printmaking. What were the obstacles and advantages? I feel like The lines was an obstacle because you had decide which would look more realstic and stand out more. You couldn't put too much or it will blend in with the background.

Print Sketch

1. Why is texture so important to have in your sketches?
It's important to have your sketches because then you can decide what to choose from. If you have options you can choose something diffrent that you might think you like doing.

2. Why is it neccessary for you to have several references of each animal and each background? Explain.
If you have refrences then you can be inspired by something like what feature the animal might have or what a background can have. Then you can have something visual you can look at and draw instead of imaging it and trying to draw it out. When you have something visual that you are trying to draw it will come out more accuratly then trying to imagine it.

3. When you look at your sketches are you able to see which sketch is the strongest and will make the best print? How do you know this?
Yes, because when you finsh drawing the sketches you can imagine how the animal looks and how much texture it can have. When you want a stong picture then you have to make sure you can see the animal and it's textures without it blending in with their background.

Chalk Mural

1. Explain your experience working on a team and executing your ideas for the mural.
I think that it was fun and intresting to work with other people because we all have diffrent ideas and we just combine it to something we can all agree on.

2. Explain the importance of collaboration when working on a team.
It is very important because you have to make sure who is doing what. If people get confused and color it difrently or put it on the wrong side, it wouldn't work out the way it should have. So when you talk to your teammates it means that you won't get confused on doing some stuff and they can also help you out.

3.  How successful was this project? Explain how and why.
I felt like this project was very succesful because we communicated very well with each other and everybody on the team had an amount to complete. I think that it turned out very neatly and nice.

4. Explain how you feel about creating artwork that others can interact with. Ex. Invoving the whole school?
I feel like it would be nice to have something done together with others, so others can get involved and do some part of the work. Also every individual can have their own ideas and be inspired by other people ideas. Then when we start doing the work each person would contribute a little part so in the ending everyone would feel really good about their artwork because they have an artwork that they can be pround of.
